Summary: The Microsurgery Fellowship at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center offers a comprehensive and high-volume experience in microsurgical reconstruction. The program is one-year in duration and participates in the Microsurgery Match.

Fellows will rotate through multiple central Ohio institutions including The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James), The Ohio State East Hospital and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. At Ohio State, fellows work with our world-renowned microsurgeons to learn skills and expertise this in highly specialized field.

Fellows are exposed to a broad spectrum of microsurgery, including those related to trauma, cancer and those of pediatric or congenital nature. Fellows will gain experience in specialized procedures such as multi-flap breast reconstruction, lymphedema, mesenteric lymph node transfer, targeted muscle reinnervation, supercharged jejunal transfer, nerve transfer and advanced orthoplastic reconstruction. Opportunities to participate in multidisciplinary programs such as military medicine, orthoplastic surgery and neuroplastic surgery are available during the fellowship.

Our microsurgery fellowship program offers junior attendingship allowing fellows to have independent clinics and to also perform non-microsurgical reconstruction and general plastic surgery procedures. Fellows gain valuable experience as a junior faculty member broadening their skillset and working closely with many experts across the field.

Summary: There are only 9 CAST-approved Peripheral Nerve Fellowships in the country and Penn Medicine is a leader among the group. Peripheral nerve surgery (PNS) deals with the evaluation and treatment of patients with traumatic nerve injuries, entrapment neuropathies (e.g., CTS, cubital tunnel syndrome, etc.) and mass lesions associated with peripheral nerves (e.g., tumors and cysts). PNS also includes distinguishing surgically treatable peripheral nerve problems from primary peripheral neuropathies and those secondary to systemic diseases such as diabetes.

During your time within the fellowship, you’ll be reporting to Dr. Ali and Dr. Zager who are two trailblazers of this subspecialty of neurosurgery. Working out of the only comprehensive nerve center in the region, you’ll have the opportunity to work on conditions ranging from common to the most complex. For example, you’ll be exposed to Dorsal Root Entry Zone Procedures, Gracilis Free Functional Muscle Transfers, Neuroma Resections, Nerve Grafts, and much more.

Institute: University of Utah

Location: Salt Lake City, UT USA

Funded: Yes

Summary: The Peripheral Nerve Surgery fellow will learn treatment of peripheral nerve tumors, complex entrapment syndromes, peripheral nerve injuries, pain disorders, CNS disorders that benefit from peripheral nerve surgery (including spinal cord injury and spasticity), and surgical diagnosis. Expertise is built in anatomy, MR and ultrasound imaging, electrodiagnostic studies, and neurostimulation. Clinical practice is integrated with neurology and plastic hand surgery. Minimally invasive and endoscopic techniques, including spinal, are emphasized.

Institute: Washington University School of Medicine

Location: St. Louis, MO USA

Funded: Yes

Summary: The fellow will be an active participant in the clinic where they will develop an understanding of the diagnosis of nerve injuries and observe the results of surgical interventions. They will also have a role in evaluating the patients in the pre-operative and post-operative period. The fellow will participate in operative nerve releases and reconstructions under the guidance and mentorship of faculty. The development of microsurgical skills will be fostered through microsurgical training in the laboratory and then implemented for patients in the clinical setting. The fellow will also spend valuable time with the neurologists learning the basics of electrodiagnostic studies, as well as with nerve specialized hand therapists, to understand the perioperative treatment of nerve disorders.

Our faculty will be closely involved in your training, while giving you the opportunity to gain confidence and independence. You will participate not only as a trainee, but also as a teacher, working closely with plastic surgery residents and medical students.

Summary: At UW SMPH, we train world-class nerve surgeons. You will be exposed to a wide variety of cases of different complexity. Nerve entrapments including carpal tunnel release, ulnar nerve decompression, peroneal nerve decompression for foot drop, lateral femoral cutaneous nerve transposition for meralgia paresthetica and anterior scalenectomy for thoracic outlet syndrome. Nerve tumors treated in our facility include benign ones like neurofibroma and schwannoma, as well as rare malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST). Regarding nerve trauma, our multidisciplinary Brachial Plexus Clinic is attended by neurosurgery, plastic surgery, rehabilitation/pain management, occupational therapy, nurse coordinator and neurology (off-site for EMG/NCS). Their substantial wealth of knowledge and expertise significantly enhances the program. The multidisciplinary environment teaches you to work synergistically with other departments.

The mission of this fellowship is to teach you when and how to select and perform cutting-edge surgeries, teach the next generation of nerve surgeons and teach you to become a leader. You will be comfortable interpreting diagnostic techniques such as EMG/NCS, ultrasound and MR neurograms.

During this fellowship, you will have access to state-of-the-art clinical and research equipment, augmented by innovative imaging protocols in high technologically advanced procedures. You will engage in close collaboration with esteemed faculty members and dedicated clinical staff. You will have access to cadaver specimens in our Surgical Skills Lab. You will attend and help organize our yearly Wisconsin Nerve Cadaver Lab.
